Day Of the Beast by Zane Grey
This is a story of severly wounded soldiers coming back from a war (WW 1) to a society totally different from the one they left (the start of the roaring twenties) and largely indifferent to their sacrifices for their country. Even though it was written in 1922, it was appropriate for the 1970s, and possibly for today as well

I did not realize that Zane grey did anything else but Westerns. Maybe I should read one.
Most of his novels were, but he wrote at least one other WW 1 novel - Desert of Wheat. It's a story of German immigrant grain farmers in the Pacific Northwest, and their strong German sentiments.
He also was a noted fishing devotee and writer.
George,
Congratulations on successfully setting up your blog!
